My name is Anouk Anansi and I'm the founder of Earth Sole. My shoe journey began in December 2020 in South Africa, where I was living at the time. On a rainy day at a festival, my friend Sarah showed some leather offcuts and said, "Let's make something." Not long before, I had been inspired by the idea of grounding — staying connected to the earth — through the documentary The Earthing Movie . I spent much of my time barefoot while living in my caravan and surrounded by nature. But as I was moving back to the city of Cape Town, I wanted a simple shoe that would still keep me grounded. So at that festival, I decided to make my own pair of barefoot shoes. Over the following year, many people fell in love with my shoes. And even though I had no experience in business, leatherworking or shoemaking, I liked the idea that others could also benefit from a healthy, comfortable shoe. And that's why I decided to give it a go. In May 2022, I officially began. I measured hundreds of people's feet to create a fit that really feels like a second skin. Along the way, I found an amazing team dedicated to handcrafting each pair, as well as local suppliers of leather offcuts — because giving beautiful materials a second life has always been an important part of the journey. It's been a special adventure, with big ups and big downs en many magical synchronicities, and the biggest thing that I love is meeting incredible customers who share the same values: staying close to the earth, and close to themselves. Leather Worker Production Process Production Process Discover how each pair of Earth Soles is brought to life, crafted by hand with care and precision. Selecting the leather We work with a wide variety of reused leather colors. Once an order comes in, we collect the right colors and begin crafting the shoes. Leather work In the first phase, our team cuts and glues the shoes, punching holes for stitching. This hands-on process takes about 1.5 hours—watch the behind-the-scenes video below. Stitching In the final step, each shoe is hand-stitched with high-quality waxed thread. We use a plier to make it friendlier for the fingers! It's a process that takes about an hour to complete. Packing & Shipping Before shipping, we pack each pair in non-plastic pagacking. We add a shoe bag made from recycled fabric, and our information cards—ready to travel the world! Charity Charity To continue the circle of giving and receiving, we proudly donate $1.5 per pair sold to those incredible South African NGO's. U Turn Anouk, the founder of Earth Sole, volunteered with U-Turn for two years and knows they do very impactful work. U-Turn empowers Cape Town’s homeless with a 2-year program for skill development. and job readiness. Greenpop Greenpop restores forests and raises environmental awareness in Southern Africa. Earth Soles offers tailor made and custom fitted leather barefoot shoes, made to fit also the most unique shapes and sizes of feet Measure Guide Our regular fit is designed for medium-width feet with rounded toes. Follow the steps below to measure your feet accurately, to see whether our regular fit suits you or if you’ll need a custom fitted Earth Sole. Step 1: Watch The Video Step 2: Measure Your Feet Print the measuring template here (recommended) or follow the following guidelines. For the mobile version, scroll down for visual guidance! You will need: - Two blank papers - Pen or pencil - Tape measure - Have a look at the image below for visual guidance 1. Draw 5 horizontal lines, each 4 cm below the other 2. Place your pen at the top line as in the image. Let your right foot touch your pen slightly, and trace your foot with the pen held upright . Avoid pushing too hard against your foot. 3. Measure your bridge Measure over the top of your foot at the 4 horizontal lines, not keeping the tape measure too tight or too loose around your feet. Note your measurements in centimeters. 4. Measure your foot length Measure in a straight vertical line from top to bottom (so not from the big toe to the bottom!) 5. Repeat for the other left foot 6. Take photos. Capture clean photos of your measurements, taken from right above. Well done! Please send us your measurements here . Step 3: Check Your Measurements - Did you measure the 4 horizontal lines over the top of your feet? - Are the horizontal lines 4 cm apart from each other? - Are the measurements in centimeters? Step 4: Send Your Measurements Send us your measurements here . Only once we have received your complete measurements we can start creating your tailor-made Earth Sole. Take care of your Earth Soles, and your Earth Soles will take care of you! Have a read through the tips and tricks we have to offer, for a longer lasting barefootwear. Use & Care Take care of your Earth Soles, and your Earth Soles will take care of you. Read our advice for longer-lasting barefootwear: Your shoes will mold to your feet over time. If they're too tight initially, wet them while wearing them for faster stretching. Once they fit comfortably, avoid getting them wet to prevent further stretching. If they do get wet, air-dry them away from direct sunlight. Keep the soles in good condition by using beeswax or Dubbin. We also sell natural beeswax to support your Earth Sole here . Try to avoid hot, abrasive pavements and tar as the sole will wear through faster Problem Solving If the waxed thread wears through, a drop of one-second glue will prevent unraveling.
