My name is Anouk, and I made my very first pair of shoes in December '21. I had no idea so many others would fall in love with my shoes in the following year! But when it happened, I decided to make more people happy with these simple, comfortable, and natural barefoot shoes. I started looking for offcuts to make our shoes in local upholsteries in Cape Town, where I lived back then — and where our shoes are still made today. I began building a dream team, many of whom are still with us. The quality and perfect fit of the shoes have been improving month by month, and I’m now proud of a shoe that feels so good that people have even fallen asleep wearing them. Earth Soles offers tailor made and custom fitted leather barefoot shoes, made to fit also the most unique shapes and sizes of feet Measure Guide Our regular fit is designed for medium-width feet with rounded toes. Follow the steps below to measure your feet accurately, to see whether our regular fit suits you or if you’ll need a custom fitted Earth Sole. Step 1: Watch The Video Step 2: Measure Your Feet Print the measuring template here (recommended) or follow the following guidelines. For the mobile version, scroll down for visual guidance! You will need: - Two blank papers - Pen or pencil - Tape measure - Have a look at the image below for visual guidance 1. Draw 5 horizontal lines, each 4 cm below the other 2. Place your pen at the top line as in the image. Let your right foot touch your pen slightly, and trace your foot with the pen held upright . Avoid pushing too hard against your foot. 3. Measure your bridge Measure over the top of your foot at the 4 horizontal lines, not keeping the tape measure too tight or too loose around your feet. Note your measurements in centimeters. 4. Measure your foot length Measure in a straight vertical line from top to bottom (so not from the big toe to the bottom!) 5. Repeat for the other left foot 6. Take photos. Capture clean photos of your measurements, taken from right above. Well done! Please send us your measurements here . Step 3: Check Your Measurements - Did you measure the 4 horizontal lines over the top of your feet? - Are the horizontal lines 4 cm apart from each other? - Are the measurements in centimeters? Step 4: Send Your Measurements Send us your measurements here . Only once we have received your complete measurements we can start creating your tailor-made Earth Sole. Use & Care Take care of your Earth Soles, and your Earth Soles will take care of you. Read our advice for longer-lasting barefootwear: Your shoes will mold to your feet over time. If they're too tight initially, wet them while wearing them for faster stretching. Once they fit comfortably, avoid getting them wet to prevent further stretching. If they do get wet, air-dry them away from direct sunlight. Keep the soles in good condition by using beeswax or Dubbin. We also sell natural beeswax to support your Earth Sole here . Try to avoid hot, abrasive pavements and tar as the sole will wear through faster Problem Solving If the waxed thread wears through, a drop of one-second glue will prevent unraveling. Our Story Our Story My shoe journey began in December 2020 in South Africa, where I lived at the time. On a rainy day at a festival, my friend Sarah grabbed her leather offcuts and said, “Let’s make something.” I had recently been inspired by the concept of grounding — staying connected to the earth — through the documentary The Earthing Movie . I was barefoot a lot, but since I was moving back to the city of Cape Town, I wanted simple footwear that would still keep me grounded. Right there, I made the first — and still current — design of Earth Sole. In the year that followed, many others shared their love for my shoes. Even though I had no experience with leather or shoemaking, I loved the idea that others could also benefit from a shoe like mine, and decided to give the journey a go. In May ’22, I started measuring over a hundred people’s feet and individually created each size so they would fit like a glove. I built a team to support this 2.5-hour handmade process, and together we continued making them from recycled leather. It’s been a special journey, meeting incredible customers along the way who are on the same mission — staying close to the earth, and close to themselves. Leather Worker Production Process Production Process Discover how each pair of Earth Soles is brought to life, crafted by hand with care and precision. Selecting the leather We work with a wide variety of reused leather colors. Once an order comes in, we collect the right colors and begin crafting the shoes. Leather work In the first phase, our team cuts and glues the shoes, punching holes for stitching. This hands-on process takes about 1.5 hours—watch the behind-the-scenes video below. Stitching In the final step, each shoe is hand-stitched with high-quality waxed thread. We use a plier to make it friendlier for the fingers! It's a process that takes about an hour to complete. Packing & Shipping Before shipping, we pack each pair in non-plastic pagacking. We add a shoe bag made from recycled fabric, and our information cards—ready to travel the world! Charity Charity To continue the circle of giving and receiving, we proudly donate $1.5 per pair sold to those incredible South African NGO's. U Turn Anouk, the founder of Earth Sole, volunteered with U-Turn for two years and knows they do very impactful work. U-Turn empowers Cape Town’s homeless with a 2-year program for skill development. and job readiness. Greenpop Greenpop restores forests and raises environmental awareness in Southern Africa.
