My name is Anouk, and I made my very first pair of shoes in December '21. I had no idea so many others would fall in love with my shoes in the following year! But when it happened, I decided to make more people happy with these simple, comfortable, and natural barefoot shoes. I started looking for offcuts to make our shoes in local upholsteries in Cape Town, where I lived back then — and where our shoes are still made today. I began building a dream team, many of whom are still with us. If, within the first 12 months of your purchase, you find that the shoes do not meet your expectations, please don't hesitate to contact us. When we acknowledge the issues comes from our side, we will make sure to send you a second pair for shipping costs only. Quality issues with your Earth Soles : If you encounter similar or new issues with the second pair, we will refund your purchase. The refund amount will be determined by the length of time you've owned the shoes before contacting us. We will calculate this by dividing your original purchase price by 12 (representing the months in a year) and then multiplying this figure by the number of months you've had the shoes. Use & Care Take care of your Earth Soles, and your Earth Soles will take care of you. Read our advice for longer-lasting barefootwear: Your shoes will mold to your feet over time. If they're too tight initially, wet them while wearing them for faster stretching. Once they fit comfortably, avoid getting them wet to prevent further stretching. If they do get wet, air-dry them away from direct sunlight. Keep the soles in good condition by using beeswax or Dubbin. We also sell natural beeswax to support your Earth Sole here . Try to avoid hot, abrasive pavements and tar as the sole will wear through faster Problem Solving If the waxed thread wears through, a drop of one-second glue will prevent unraveling. Discover our natural brand, called Earth Sole. Find out how we started, where we stand for and who is behind our elegant barefoot shoes! Our Story Our Story Our journey began in December 2020. At a festival on a rainy day in South Africa, Anouk was handed a piece of recycled leather by a friend. Inspired by the concept of grounding, the idea for a barefoot shoe in its simplest form was born — a natural, handmade shoe with a leather sole, through which you would stay connected to the ground. It started with just a shoe for herself, but the shoes stood out Anouk realized many others were interested in a truly natural barefoot shoe like hers. Though she had no experience with leather or shoe-making, her passion for creation and love for helping others with her natural shoes led her to dive into this project in May 2022. She spent countless hours perfecting the fit with feedback from people at markets and events, to get the perfect fit for the regular-shaped feet. She created a small local team in Muizenberg, Cape Town that would create the Earth Soles to the highest quality, still using recycled leather. If you like to meet the team, scroll down below! Leather Worker Production Process Production Process Discover how each pair of Earth Soles is brought to life, crafted by hand with care and precision. Selecting the leather We work with a wide variety of reused leather colors. Once an order comes in, we collect the right colors and begin crafting the shoes. Leather work In the first phase, our team cuts and glues the shoes, punching holes for stitching. This hands-on process takes about 1.5 hours—watch the behind-the-scenes video below. Stitching In the final step, each shoe is hand-stitched with high-quality waxed thread. We use a plier to make it friendlier for the fingers! It's a process that takes about an hour to complete. Packing & Shipping Before shipping, we pack each pair in non-plastic pagacking. We add a shoe bag made from recycled fabric, and our information cards—ready to travel the world! Charity Charity To continue the circle of giving and receiving, we proudly donate $1.5 per pair sold to those incredible South African NGO's. U Turn Anouk, the founder of Earth Sole, volunteered with U-Turn for two years and knows they do very impactful work. U-Turn empowers Cape Town’s homeless with a 2-year program for skill development. and job readiness. Greenpop Greenpop restores forests and raises environmental awareness in Southern Africa.
